GUEST COLUMNIST: Robert Baca

Well folks, I am back with another one of my Disney stories from my days working there at the park. Anyhow, I wanted to tell you guys about the day that the tree fell in Frontierland. I don’t recall the exact year it happened but I can tell ya this much….I was the very first one on the seen when the accident occurred. This tree was located in front of the Golden Horse Shoe and next to the Mark Twain Landing. From what I know, the tree had been there since Walt himself purchased the land making it an original. It was huge but beautiful. Anyhow, it started around 400-430pm, when I was finishing up the rafts and ending my shift for that day. As I was writing in the hourly counts for the attraction on a log sheet as well as facing the Mark Twain dock, when suddenly I heard a sound that was very strange. I recall hearing a loud “POP!” and then a crunching sound. As soon as that happened…I saw the tree which was located next to the petrified tree stump to the left of the Mark Twain dock, start to tilt and then fall over. It crashed to the floor with such force that you could feel the vibration in the ground.

Disneyland In The News

Disneyland: The Planet’s Safest Place
I just returned from my first trip to Disneyland. It wasn’t on my “bucket list.” Not like I’ve got one foot in the grave, but I could have died contentedly without ever seeing Mickey “in the flesh.” I was raised by parents who had both...
Film Goes To Disneyland, Club 33 And The Disney Animation Research Library
A couple weeks ago I traveled down to Los Angeles for a very unusual press day for Disney Animation Studio’s new film The Princess and the Frog. Disney is really hoping to promote the return to hand drawn animation with an old school Disney look and...
Is Cigarette Smoke A Problem At Disneyland?
Villains apparently aren’t the only ones fuming in the Halloween character area at Disneyland, according to two guests. The cigarette smoke from a nearby smoking area reportedly is wafting over, making some guests and employees smolder...
iPhone App Creates Virtual Disneyland
The iPhone commercial claims that there’s an app for everything, which means there’s an app for planning a trip to Disneyland. The Walkee iGuide to Disneyland Park for iPhone and iPod touch claims to do just that: It helps park guests navigate...
Halloween
Holiday "overlays," as Disney calls them are nothing new to Disneyland, which I visited on a recent vacation. An "overlay" is when a ride gets re-decorated for the holidays, and there are two great examples right now at Disneyland. Here's one...
Fantasmic!
Part of the fun of a trip to Disneyland is watching its version of "Fantasmic!" At Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando, "Fantasmic!" plays in a specially built theater, but at Disneyland it just takes place in the middle of the park. Guests watch...
Q And A With New Disneyland Resort President
When George Kalogridis left his previous job in Anaheim, Disney’s California Adventure was barely a year old. On Monday, Kalogridis, 55, toured a torn-up park undergoing a $1-billion renovation - and realized he’s now in charge.
It's A Small World Changes
Another tidbit from my California vacation: Remember the hoopla/outrage over the changes Disneyland made to the "it's a small world" attraction? Figures representing Disney characters were added to different scenes in the gentle boat ride...
Five Ghostly Disneyland Urban Legends
You know, being a ghost stuck at Disneyland doesn't sound all that bad. It's better than haunting some family in Texas, right? Like any place with a rich history, Disneyland's got its fair share of urban legends and myths surrounding it--take...
How To Avoid The Disney Parking Hassle

I was looking at DLDHistory one day and realizing the huge amount of content that we have that no other site has.

The problem is trying to sort through all of it and put together a nice time line of the History of Disneyland. I also watched most of the Disneyland Historical DVD's available, official and unofficial. None of the DVD's seem to have the complete history of Disneyland including backstage photos and information about deaths and injuries rare video clips etc.

We are working on creating a full length Disneyland History DVD. The DVD will be a 5-6 hour video covering the full history of Disneyland. Including all attraction openings, parades, deaths, injuries, trivia, backstage photos and lots more. To my knowledge no DVD has ever been created with this type of content.

We are now offering previews as we put together the DVD. The previews are low resolution working copies. The voice over has not been added yet. We will add background music and a few more edits. We will add more chapters as they are completed. The table of contents of the DVD will be:

  • Chapter I-Title

  • Chapter II-Before Disneyland
Includes rare video clips from Coney Island and Pacific Ocean Park

  • Chapter III 1955-1959
    Opening Day
    Frontierland
    Tomorrowland
    Adventureland

    Fantasyland
    Main Street USA

  • Chapter IV 1960-1969
    Frontierland
    Tomorrowland
    Adventureland
    Fantasyland
    Main Street USA

  • Chapter V 1970-1979

  • Chapter VI 1980-1989

  • Chapter VII 1990-1999

  • Chapter VIII 2000-2009

  • Chapter IX The Future

  • Chapter X Credits

  • Chapter XI Extras

One very unique feature that will be available on our DVD is a quick way to access additional information on DLDHistory.com about an attraction. The final DVD will be a high definition video. We are predicting that the DVD should be complete early 2010.

DVD Previews Can Be Seen HERE
